1954 5 1/2 hp johnson fuel/oil ratio?

i have a 1954 5 1/2 johnson cd11 seahorse and on the case it says 1/2 pint to one gallon. i did the math and that is a 16:1 ratio. is that to high. would a 24:1 or a 32:1 ratio work for that. the reason i ask is because it smoke like crazy no matter if im in idle or full throttle

Lots of debate on this subject. Some will say yes and others no. I use 24:1 with synthetic TC-W3 outboard oil as it smokes much less than conventional. That's my opinion.

Yes, 16:1 was the original ratio but with today's modern oils if you use 24:1 with a tc-w3 oil you should be fine. I use 24:1 on all my 50's engines with no issues so far. I also use Pennzoil fully synthetic which is biodegradable and it smokes less.
