I have a 20 hp merc on a pontoon. Electric start. When I key the switch the starter gear does not completely raise up and engage the fly wheel. The starter gear will turn but not engage. Do I need a new starter?

first try some wd 40 on the shaft and try cranking a couple times - if fixed wipe of the wd and put some 10/30 motor oil on it . if that doesn't do it post back .

The most common starter problems are a low battery and/or poor battery cable connections.

Check the battery voltage, if low, recharge and take it to AutoZone or NAPA and have it Load Tested to be sure that it is in reliable condition.

Lightly sand clean BOTH ends of BOTH battery cables AND the short cable linking the starter to the relay.

I lubricated the starter shaft and got it to engage the flywheel. Wouldn't turn over the motor. Tried a different battery and it worked fine. Time for a new battery. Thanks for your suggestions.:)
