Need some engine help

I just got a johnson Model#4W71d Serial#E3364084 in a trade and I don't need it. I think it is a 1971 4HP? Is this correct? Also he told me the recoil spring does not work but it will start with a rope on top of the engine. If this is true how do I do that? All the engines that I have ever had have been new so this is something I have never had to do. Also how much is the motor worth the way it is and when it is fixed. Any advice would be a great help. Thanks

Yes it is a 1971 4hp . You can start the motor with a rope . If you look at the top of the flywheel you will see some small hook shaped cutouts . You can tie a knot in the end of a small rope , hook it in that cut out , and wrap it arround the grove in the flywheel and pull start the motor . Do not wrap it more than 2 times . If you do the motor may fire up and take the rope and a few fingers with it .
