I have a 1975 Johnson 25hp electric start. It sat for a couple of years, so I put new plugs, in it and it cranked. I took it to the lake and it ran good after some tinkering. I brought it home, and went back to the lake a few days later it would not run. I could crank it and it would run for about 5 seconds then die, now there is oil and gas coming out of the exhaust, and it will still run for about 5 seconds then die. It has back fired a couple of times. Any suggestions?

I'd put money on it being a dirty carb esp as it had sat around for a couple of years but check the sparks as advised.

Although the oil and gas coming from th exhast suggest it may be flooding. Check the correct operation of the choke, make sue the flap opens properly. Could be the float sticking or needle valve not seating.
