hey whats up guys, new to the forum,
i have an old(67?) super seahorse..i ran it two years ago(new prop, rebuilt carb, new points) and i had the motor too low on the transom, so it sprayed water everywhere at hi speed...i made some baffles for the transom to avoid getting water in the boat for the time being, but i later took measurements off of the donor boat for (a leaky aluminum unit) to properly raise the motor to the right height..my question is this...at the height i have the motor at now, theres no spray anymore, but at speed,im not getting water out of the two holes directly behind and below the engine..at idle i am getting water though..so im wondering if there's a high speed pickup that exhausts the water out underneath the water or something...i never really noticed before if i was getting water out of the upper holes or not at speed, but the motor never overheated so i just dont know. im also relatively new to boating and i dont wana mess the old girl up..basically im trying to figure out how to determine where the engine needs to sit on the transom so as to give me optimum speed while still picking up water...
any help i can get is appreciated
matt

Two holes?? Isn't there only one? With a big pleated hose going to it? Or are you sure it is a 1967?

Anyhoo, 99.9% of the water goes out with the exhaust behind the propeller. Only a bit is sprayed out the above water exhaust relief. And the amount of that spray varies with speed and whether or not the thermostat is open or in recirculating mode.

sorry yes there is one hole out back up top..so how do i know if im getting water at speed?as long as the props underneath the water am i good or what? i follow what you're saying about the hi speed exhaust/ water hole by the prop, ive seen that,im just wondering where the intake is and how much do i hafta worry that its not picking up water at speed? at idle she spits a good bit of water out of the top hole, but i didn't know if when i plane out, things change as far as the water intake is concerned?

ur anti ventillations plate should be about 1 inch beneath the bottom of the boat

now i would check ur motor while at high speed that the water intake is fully under water. and also that when u turn its pumping good water too

is the water intake the port on the opposite side of the prop, the one with with the screen on it?

I just learned this on my 67: the screen intake on the starboard side above the cavitation plate is for when the motor is in reverse (don't know why it would matter) and the forward intake is underneath the the cav. plate (the traingle skeg looking portrusion also has a screen. I'm probably wrong it's just how I interpreted what I read.
