shifting problems

OK i have a 63' johnson 28 hp outboard. it's old but after a thorough flush of the old feul, carb cleaning and change of the impeller it runs like a champ...however when we took it out we were unable to go forward but reverse worked fine upon futher inspection we disconnected the cable and pulled this "keeper" rod looking thing out and pushed the shifter down futher by hand and it worked so my question is how do you adjust the shifter????

Sounds like the shift rod is not connected properly. Remove the plate on the side of the leg and make sure the ends of the upper and lower shift rods are properly fitted into the coupler. The coupler bolts should go through the indents in the ends of the shift rods. If they aren't, the motor won't shift properly, and unfortunately, the threads on the bolts will most likely be stripped.

If the shift rod is connected properly the shift cable is likely stretched. To adjust requires an adjustable sleeve at one end of the outer cable housing or somewhere along its length. By adjusting out you shorten inner cable through.
If no adjustment is available a new cable would be needed.

thanx we got it. it was adjustable but only very little on the shift post itself (two bolts) but it was enough.
