Hi there I have just bought a fletcher gto 17 foot speed boat dunno age really. It has a mercury 150hp think its 1970- 1974 engine. At full throttle and trim up a bit the best i can get out of the boat is 38mph at approx 4800rpm.

Is the above speed the best i can get out of the boat or would another prop help with top end.

The guy gave me two props 1 plastic kind and 1 s/s.

Here is a link to the boat

any help would be greatly apprieciated plus any other things as approx age and things i should look out for in the engine and boat would be cool.

Do some research and find out what the proper RPM is for WOT on that motor.

I think you may need to drop down a bit a couple inches on the pitch, 4800 seems a bit low for a OB. I could be wrong, I don't know much about early 70's Mercury.

Oh yeah, the SS will give you better performance than the plastic,

What is the prop size?Usually on the barrel or under the prop nut.
Is the speed by gps.Be sure its running on all cylinders.
Do a compression check.
