I have a 93 40hp Evinrude with a bad 5 wire rectifier(#0584476). The local marinas told me that part # changed & they are trying to sell me a 4 wire rectifier. The 4 wire is missing the purple wire. Does anyone know if & what this will affect??

Rick I don't know, have you tried the search function. I see this question often enough that the answer must be in here someplace...I suspect 2 wires serve the same function, that seems to be the case with electrical stuff.

Rick, The purple wire is usually the ign accessory wire. When the ign is on, it would have +12V, just like the red wire that runs to the starter solenoid. If you trust the source of the part, it sounds reasonable.

I could not find an exploded parts diagram for that motor for some reason.

Re: 5 wire to 4 wire rectifier

THANKS!
I searched the rectifier part #584476 on iboats marine store & they list 3 different rectifiers the CDI (5 wire) Sierra (4 wire) & Mallory (4 wire).
I have a tournament this weekend so I guess I'll buy the 4 wire Sierra locally & hope the purple isnt inportant.
The model # is TE40ELETB
