Engine is 1983 Johnson 7.5hp. It started putting out steam from tell tale. I replaced thermostat and impeller - fired up - still putting out steam. I pulled the cylinder head - there are salt deposits in the waterways which obviously aren't helping. Where else does the cooling water flow apart from around the head and how do I clean out the salt?

start cleaning everything you can see, drop lower can connect hose to water tube and flush. put head back on with out tstat, use old gasket, flush. once clear, replace head gasket, and reassemble.

Thanks Tashasdaddy - by the lower can I presume you mean the gearbox? - I'll take your advice accordingly. I have heard that there is a rubber seal at the top of cooling water pipe which might have perished and blocked water flow. This involves removal of power head so I'll try your solution first!
Thanks - Paul D
