I changed the impeller on my 2003 Tohatsu M9.8B and now I can't get the lower unit back on. It stays about an inch or two from being able to be bolted together. There is a curve in the shift rod right where the top and bottom unit go together which seems to be the culprit but I can't figure what to do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tohatsu 9.8hp help

The shift rod is self guiding and is probably not the problem. Usually it's the drive shaft itself that keeps the lower unit away. There is a "feel" to doing this. Just concentrate on getting the top of the drive shaft into the crank shaft and keep it mind that if it was as easy as it appears no one would pay mechanics:)

And, of course, the splines in the crank have to engage the driveshaft, so a slight rotation as you engage the two may help.
