Default 1957 Evinrude Lark short-to-long shaft...

I have a 1957 Evinrude Lark 35hp and I think it is a short shaft, but am not sure.

When mounted on my boat, the distance from the top of the transom to the point of the 'bullet' (horizontal with the prop) on the lower unit is 24". I have a 83' Evinrude 20hp and the distance is 27.5" and it works on my boat just fine.

The 20hp works just fine but the 35hp does not sit deep enough in the water.

1) Is my motor a short shaft @ 24" or a long shaft?
2) What motors can I 'switch out' lower units with?
3) Where can I get a longer lower unit?

Thanks!

The long shaft has a 5 inch extension piece which bolts on between the lower unit and the leg. pretty obvious if it is there or not. The lower units on the 1957 35hp were pretty unique and only interchange with a 1956 30hp. If it's a short shaft, to convert to long shaft you'll need the 5 inch extension piece I mentioned earlier, a long drive shaft, a long shift rod coupler, and a water tube extension. There is also a large vertical bolt which sits at the very back of the leg which bolts in from the top. You'll need a longer one of those.

Also, you may want to shop antique outboards (http://www.aomci.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/Y...ard=Webvertize) or ebay for parts. Also, you can place a free ad on antique outboards for the parts you need.
