I recently bought a used 2002 Mercury 9.9hp 2 stroke motor (model: 1010201ZD) for my 14 foot v-hull fishing boat. I am new to this stuff and I was wondering after having my boat out for the first time this past weekend. Should there be water shooting out of the side of this motor? I ask because I noticed several other boats on the lake with 9.9s (mostly other makes) that had water shooting out. I don't want to burn up my motor before I get a chance to catch a fish! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yup, you should have water coming out of the pee hole. A couple of things though.
That motor has a thermostat. At idle, you may not have anything coming out. However, when you accelerate in gear please, as you approach WOT, you should get water out the pee hole before the motor is hot.
Once the motor is hot, you should get water out the pee hole at idle and at WOT.
Great thanks for the info. I tested the motor out in a 50 gallon drum in both idle and in gear and I never had any water in coming out of the pee hole. While I was on the lake last weekend I noticed no water coming out of the pee hole either and the motor was definitely hot at that point. What should my next step be now? I should note that both the motor and the lower unit are hot to the touch, but not too hot that I can't rest my hand on the lower unit for 4 or 5 seconds before it becomes really uncomfortable.
So, first off, under no circumstances should your lower unit be hot or even warm to the touch.
Next, you should be able to touch your motor at anytime and hold it for at least 4 or 5 seconds if your cooling system is good.
If this were my motor, first thing I would do is drop the lower unit, change the water pump, drain the lower unit oil, test for leaks since you have it off anyway, and put it all back together and see if she pumps.
Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I'm no mechanic. I think I'll take it somewhere and have it serviced. Anyone have an idea of what this kind of repair might run me?
$30 for the water pump (parts). and labour. Shouldn't be more than 1 hour of labour.
$30 for testing and refilling of lower unit.
As this is a recent motor, I'd have them check the whole motor out. I would be concerned that the water pump disintegrated and water passages may be blocked. Make sure it engages forward and reverse.
