motor ran perfect last season. and i do mean perfect. stored for winter with only 1/2 tank of gas. ive heard mixed thoughts of this.
this season, turned key and it started immediately. ran for 3 min or so an stopped. will crank but unable to start since then. changed both fuel filters and treated gas. primed both filters. plugs look pretty new. any ideas??
i didnt actually check for spark because the motor did start right up the first time. please help any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
motor is 1999 250 merc mariner w/ efi

ethanol poisoning.

I have a 98 merc 150, had and having still the same problems, thought it was my carbs but took it to my mechanic and he took out the water/fuel seperator and it was full of water. Replaced it with a new filter with clear view bulb on bottom and drain for the water and I emptied out most of my tank that had the ethanol in it, it seems ethanol turns into water within 1 week sitting. I now had the same problems agan, it will start for the few minutes in idle then shut off. I will again drain some fuel, add fuel stabilize(STABIL) ALSO there are a screw on each set of carbs 3 total that you can take out and let the water drain out. I am going to do that also. Let me know if anyone is trying this. it works, just get that ethanol outta there and put non-ethanol.
