71' Evinrude 50 ignition problems

just bought an 71 evinrude 50 model # 50172S. the guy i got it from said it ran fine until they put a new starter on it. The plugs wont fire in the motor ,take them out and they will fire strong..?.? looks like the top coil pack has been replaced recently... all wiring seems to be correct. but then again im not much on boat motors.. any ideals would help thanks

Welcome to iboats.

I have an OEM service manual for a 71 Johnson 60HP motor I used to have. If you want, I'll scan and email you a pdf of the ignition chapter for troubleshooting. I would imagine it's similar enough to the 50.

OK, I will bring it into work tomorrow to scan and send to you.

I can't guarantee the ignition system is exactly the same, but being the same year and just a 10HP difference I'm guessing it is. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me will post yea or nay about that.

I just emailed you the ignition chapter. Let me know if you don't get it-- I've had some problems sending emails to Yahoo accounts from this domain in the past.
