solid alarm 2002 90 merc

I have a 2002 90 saltwater mercury, when i first took it out a soild alarm went off olny when i took it over 5000 rpm so I would cut the motor and when it went under 1000 rpm it would turn off. So I changed out the thermostat and was fine ran it 6 times atfer that and was fine. Now the other day i was 13 miles out in the ocean and the solid alarm went off but now it wont let me take it over 3000 rpm, and as soon as i turn the key the alarm turns on. Please help.

well I've narrowed it down to the oil, by disconnecting the sensor and turning the key in the on position and the alarm goes off. I was wondering if there is a safety mechanism that after awhile will not let the motor go over 3000 rpm or is the motor shot.

if you have got all the other variables taken care of.....as you say,it should be a module problem
