electric shift

1st post..my electric shift 1962 75 evinrude wont go in forward ..had to go 3 miles with my kicker motor to get off the river..I drained the fluid and it came out milky white..I'm stuck as to what to do next..take apart the gearcase? I hope not..any help would be GREATLY appreciated otis ps it did go into reverse

First thing you always want to do when diagnosing electric shifts is to check the voltages at the gearcase leads. They come up near the backside of the powerhead and have rubber sleeves covering the terminals. Slide the sleeves back but leave the wires connected. Check the voltage on each. Should be near battery voltage. Should show voltage on green wire in forward gear and on blue wire in reverse. If it doesn't, check out the electrical system, especially the shift switch in the control.

Change that oil, using Johnson or Evinrude Premium Blend oil---nothing else. If you continue to get water intrusion, fix the seals.
