when I come down off the throttle to the idol position the motor stays at a high idol for about 10-15 seconds before going to an idol. I've been told thats normal for a 86 johnson is this true?????

Re: idol issues

Sorry your right I did not give very go info. I have a 16' aluminum boat with counsel sterring, 50 HP johnson 1986 model. I just bought the boat this winter and have had it on the lake 2 so far, the problem I am having is whenever I go a 1/4 throttle or more and then bring the shifter to nutral the motor still runs at a high idol for about 15 to 20 seconds before it drops down to regular idol. This creates problems because I can shift to reverse until the idol drops to normal. I've been told that that is normal withthe mid 80's Johnsons. can anyone confirm that or point me in the right direction for a cure?

Re: idol issues

it is not normal, it sounds like the throttle or timing linkage is sticky and not returning, when it should. also could be bad throttle cable to control. could be a spring missing.

Re: idol issues

when in this state, if you kill the motor - does it also run at high idle on a warm start? I'd target the thermostat as a 1st consideration.

Re: idol issues

film495, why would you consider the tstats. it does not have a heat sensor choke.

what can I do to the cables? lube them and if so what do you recommend using.

if you determine it is the cable, replace them. no lubing them.

oop, my bad - but we know if it doesn't have the same condition on a warm restart, then something gets reset - as the same high idol condition doesn't exist after the motor is restarted.

well I had it out on the water yesterday and the condition is still there. The cables are all OK new plugs don,t know were to go from here. I guess I will have to spend the money and bring it to someone that is qualified to work on these engines.

have someone move the throttle, and see if the timing plate is returning all the way or is it sticking, and then moves back. try some wd 40 under there.

the lube could be gummed up under there, and after the motor warms, the lube gets more fluid.
