I own a Johnson 115 i think its year is 1977. i asked one of the guys on here a question and he answered it greatly. he just mention i should post it on her for other peoples reference later...
I'm installing a johnson 115hp on my boat and i cant get it to go into gear. if i adjust it i can get it to go into forward but not reverse and vise versa. so i can rule out the gear box? i'm going to check the gear oil but if it comes to it i may have to check the spline below the water impellar because the guy who sold it to me changed it out. How do i know it is where it is supposed to be? thanks.

he responded:

Mercury/Mariner shift shafts rotate, a splined coupler joins the vertical shaft to the lower unit and can be mis-aligned during reassembly.

Your Johnson/Evinrude uses a vertical movement, the shift shaft is one piece from the lower unit up to the pivot/bellcrank directly under the back of the lower carb. Some models it can be difficult to get a good look at it.

This vertical shaft screws into the shift cam in the lower unit, the height of the shaft is set by screwing the shaft into or out of the cam while the lower unit is removed from the motor.

The measurement is specified in the service manual. Adjustment is usually NOT necessary.

The eyelet/pinhole of the shaft should be at 3 o'clock when the gearcase is in neutral such that the bellcrank moves/rotates equal amounts into forward and reverse gears.

Disconnect your shift cable and manually shift into forward, neutral, and reverse. If the lower unit shifts correctly then the shift shaft adjustment is NOT your problem.

Generally when you can only shift one way and not the other the problem is a stretched shift cable, and time for replacement.
