Engine break in procedure?

Due to a busted block and exhaust manifolds, I have ordered a remanufactured long block for my 1992 Mercruiser 4.3LX.

Once I have everything installed and running properly, what is the standard break in for this engine?
It is in a 1992 Celebrity 190BR 18'-7" long and about 2500 lbs.

Re: Engine break in procedure?

I downloaded the user manual for the Mercruiser engine 1983 to 1993. I found the break in procedure on new or remanufactured engines on page 15 of 439.

It says the first 20 hours is the standard break in.
it has several procedures to follow during and after the first 20 hours.

thanks anyway.

Re: Engine break in procedure?

In a nutshell, here is the break-in.

For the first hour, let the motor come up to operating temp and then bring the boat on plane. once there keep it on plane and no full throttle. Vary the load on the motor every five minutes, a couple hundred rpm change is all that is needed. No extended idling.

Hour number two. Change loads evey twenty minutes with short full throttle busrts.

Hours three to five. Put boat thru all operating ranges. Principle is to load motor without overloading, for long periods of time, and no long idling periods, other than warm up.

No pulling anything for fisrt ten hours.

After that should be good to go.

Check your oil level often during break in.
