I am removing the external oil tank on my Evinrude 200 hp 1998 and was wondering what the proper oil to fuel ratio is.

I do not see why the ratio would be anything other than 50:1 TCW-3

That is normally a very good oil mixing system (4 wire OMS pump). Why are you removing it?

The usual reason is that a friend, of a cousin from a previous marriage, once had a piston go bad, and his mechanic told him to. The reason being, they were trouble from day 1, and they still are.

Re: Oil to fuel ratio

The oil is mixed in the OMS then sent to the carburetors. A failure would result in multiple, simultaneous cylinder failures. The failure of a single cylinder was most likely a problem with a carburetor.

FWIW: I have the same motor. Over 2000 hours on it now. A couple of electrical problems in it's lifetime but nothing involving the oiling system.

Replaced the OMS as a prevent measure @ 1000 hours.

In keeping with the oil to fuel question, I have a 1988 6 HP jphnson that calls for 100 - 1 (written on the engine itself) while my brothers 6 HP evinrude (1994 I think) calls for 50 - 1

100 - 1 scares me. any downside in running 50 - 1 in the johnson?

You should be running it on 50:1. See the link I posted earlier.

OMC flirted with 100:1 mixtures around 1985 and for a few years after but later advised that they should in fact all be run on 50:1. The decals referring to 100:1 should have been removed and the owners manual amended too.

Re: Oil to fuel ratio

50:1 under 6000 RPM, use 50% more up to 6500 RPM, double oil after that (25:1). Or: run the Evinrude E-Tec synthetic oil at 50:1 at any RPM.

Dueto failure, Last 2 times oilt to fuel ratio is about 10:1. Oil side leaks bad and I believe it is original. I whish oil side could be rebuilt. It is a good system but when it fails it causes excessive oil use. I will just mix in tank for now and look to buy a new one at some point in time. I am new to boating.
