Mixing oil with gas on an Oil injected engine

I just bought 95 stratos with a 95 evinrude 130 hp motor, the original owner had it overhauled 3 yrs. ago, it is an automatic oiled engine, but he told me to mix about a quart of oil in the gas on each fill up ( gas tank holds 18 to 21 gallons) to be safe, can to much oil cause any damage to the engine?
Thanks for any advice.

No, too much oil will not hurt your engine.

Too much oil will not harm the engine but may cause other problems like fouling plugs and excess smoke and possible carbon build up.

The former owner may have done this as a fail safe, but more info is needed... like is the motor still using the VRO system. And if so is it working properly???

Too much oil will not do any real harm other than cause a lot more smoke and you to decarb more often.
Did the previous owner tell you why you need to do this ???
Is the oil metering system working ???

I think that is a dumb idea. A qt of oil in 18 gal of gas is a 72::1 ratio. That motor will be damaged if it needs to run on that ratio, if the oil injection fails. I would think it would be better to either use the oil injection or premix, but not both.

A better idea is to carry a gallon of oil or so in the boat. If the oil injection fails, dump the proper amount of oil into the tank, shake the boat around a bit and fire up the motor and head home.

I would bet the previous owner told you to do that for one of two reasons:

1. He was told to do that after the rebuild for the initial break in period, to run it at a 25:1 ratio, and misunderstood that he only needed to do that for the first 10hrs of the break in period.

2. He has bought into the hype/myth that OMS (VRO) systems aren't reliable, and thought he was being cautious.

If it was for #1, then you should be good to stop because I would assume that it's got more than 10hrs on it since the rebuild.

If it was for #2, then don't buy into it. OMS (VRO) systems are extremely reliable, and people thinking they aren't is a hold over from years of bad mechanics blaming things on the VRO.

I have had OMS/VRO on all of my engines since 1989 and I have never had one even have a slight problem, with an average of 100hrs a season on them.

My current twin 2000 Johnson 200hp engines are pushing 1,000hrs and I have never had a single issue with the OMS system in 9 years.

I wouldn't add any oil to your gas, even the 50:1 that the OMS/VRO is giving it is more than it needs to be safe. Just make sure that the OMS/VRO is hooked up and working, if it is then you don't need to add to the gas.

Re: Mixing oil with gas on an Oil injected engine

i had a 1994 40hp johnson. i had heard of all the rumors of bad VRO units. i decided that since my 1987 20hp johnson was a 100/1 mix that if i mixed the gfas for my 40hp at 100/1 i would always be safe. this was after many tanks of gas that were not mixed so i had a pretty good idea of how the motor ran. with just adding that 100/1 mix the motor would hardly run below half throttle. trying to troll it would shake and die. i lost a few rpm at wot also. as soon as i got the tank down about 2 gal i started adding straight gas into the tank. once i had added about 4 gal the motor started to run close to normal again. i never would have thought that a 100/1 mix in a 6 gal tank would have that much effect on the engine. i didn't harm anything but i did come to the conclusion that the VRO new how much oil the motor needed and didn't need my help.
