Got a 1973 Johnson 9.5 given to me and it needed a fuel pump. Repleced the fuel pump, still wouldn't stay running, cleaned out the carb and replaced parts w/ a rebuild kit, wouldn't stay running, made sure points were set @ .020 and the timing was set correctly, wouldn't stay running, checked all the fuel lines and fittings in the motor and leading from the tank and it still wont run. If I hold my fingers over the choke it runs fine, but when I remove my fingers or use the manuel choke the motor only runs for a few seconds, acts like its not getting any fuel. All the lines and the card are clean. Plenty of fuel pumping from the lines, and filling the bowl. Any ideas of what else I can try/do? Something Im missing? Need some help please.

I would check the fuel lines, connectors -all the way back to the tank. Is the bulb staying hard? then check for a leak in the slow speed needle packing. Is the needle grooved at the tip? all of this assuming your getting at least 65 lbs of compression and both cylinders are with in 10% of each other.

Carb float set properly?

When it's acting up, pull the plugs and take a look...dry? wet?

Also, try borrowing another tank to eliminate the tank possibilities.

Good advice above. Have you set your lean/rich knob? When using the choke, is the choke plate completely closing? I'm just in the final stages of re-awakening a 1973 - 9.5 myself. Mine starts great and I'm sure yours will too. Do check the compression first chance you get. Mine is 60 each cylinder. Rick.

Absolutly, first compression check then revisit carb. especially the needle and packings. very sensative.

X2, compression check just for piece of mind and then back to the fuel system / carb. Just the fact that it runs with your hand over the carb indicates there is a lack of fuel problem....

Have you checked the low speed idle mixture setting by chance? My 1972 9.5 hp is very sensitive to this adjustment....

HTH and good luck,

Billy
