Evinrude 1955 7.5hp lower drive shaft clutch spring
Hi all, I have a 1955 7.5hp model 7518 Evinrude. I purchased a lower seal kit along with a new impeller for the pump with info from this forum...thank you. Now the problem, while dismantling the lower end I've discovered that the spring on the top end of the lower drive shaft is shattered. I assume that this is part of a clutch system. The big question....where can I find a replacement? I'm tempted to just weld the clutch unit but it would be such a shame not to restore this outboard properly. I run it with the original two hose set up (yes I know that it is dangerous but I love its uniqueness) and the motor runs like a top. Thanks for any advice.

Hi J,
Best bet is to find a parts motor - never a bad idea when running 50-year old motors. Same unit was used on the Johnson and Evinrude 5.5s and 7.5s of the era, as well as some of the Gale-made house-brand 5s as well (think Eaton's Viking, etc.)
