I just finished rebuilding a 470, and started right up, got 180 deg. temp idling, and comes down to 165 170 rev to 2000 and up rpm. has new impeller, timing is set at 4 deg. I have not taking her out on the water, this is just with the hose. Does it sound right 180, should i be concerned. 88 model year 4" heat exchanger, 2 brrl carb, new temp sending unit. checked the heat exch. looks clean to me. any positive comment would be appreciated. thanks to all

Shouldn't go over 180 under load.

I have twins of these Alex. One seems to like to run at 180 also. The other one runs at 150. Could it be the 3 inch vs 4 inch somethin or other your supposed to upgrade to.

If you didnt do the work yourself. Check the size of the heat exchanger. Its not unheard of for a Marina to charge you for work not done.

I'am running the 4" heat exchanger, I did take the ends off it when it was off the boat to visually inspect for clogs, it looked clean to me, do they make a lower thermostat for this engine, I believe the stock is 160 deg. I did replace it too.
