The main reason I would get rid of this great boat would be the shifter/throttle controls. The shifter is very clunky and difficult to operate at slow speeds from forward to reverse. It is also quite stiff in increasing throttle speed. The new boats I've driven are so smooth in and out of gear and increasing engine speed. Is it possible to replace the shifter and associated cables to get one that felt and operated like a new boat?

you'd want to disconect your control cables first. Shifters rarely go bad unless they've been fighting stiff cables for a while... then the bushings will wear out.
there was 1 series of commanders that got recalled... but that was a while ago. Take a picture of the shifter you have.
