Hi there, I've been using the site for a few years but never posted anything til now! It has always helped me out, but I haven't seemed to find anything quite like my problem. I purchased a '75 25hp short shaft last summer for $50... absolute no brainer.... the shift lever/shift shaft was broken off when I bought it so I had that replaced, and had a basic look through done. I took her out and I just got up on plane and it popped out of gear... the shift lever moved slightly and the motor was in neutral, I put it in gear and it did the same thing... so I checked linkage and adjusted the shift lever and I still had the problem... I took the lower unit off today and it looks fine to me, besides normal wear... I thought the prop might have spun so I jammed the flywheel and I could turn it slightly but it wouldn't spin on the hub. I'm clueless here any help would be appreciated fellas!

If you're using a remote control on this, disconnect it and try running it shifting manually. If that works, then the cable needs to be adjusted to allow full movement.

If your running it with the tiller, or if it still won't shift manually, same thing applies, but with the adjustment being made on the shift lever rod.

If neither takes care of the problem, odds are you have a worn shift dog in the gearcase. Replacing it requires tearing down the gearcase and replacing the dog at least and maybe the forward gear as well.

You'll want the OEM service manual for that job.

Thank you, I will try adjusting the shift rod. I checked out the shift dog forward gear and they didn't seem all that bad... maybe my thought of "normal wear" is off though.

i agree sounds like the cluch dog is slipping either that or the idle shift lock is not positiond properly either way you will need the shop manual
