Default 1964 Evinrude 60HP water pumping problem

I just bought my first boat and I'm told from the previous issue is a clog. I've taken apart what I can to get to the water pump and the impeller but I'm stuck, I can't drop the lower part to gain access to the impeller to check for any problems. I have a Evinrude 1964 60 HP Model VXL-10S. My other problem is I can't find schematics. I've taken off the bolts but the lower half wont drop, and without schematics I cant see where to go next.

I assume that you haven't removed one of the 3/8" hex head bolts from the shift rod assembly.

Remove the plate (2 screws) from the side of the long exhaust housing, now, remove the inner plate (2 screws). Now remove just one bolt from that brass shift connector that you'll see inside there. Bingo!

I know exactly where that is, I didn't want to take that off without seeing a schematic first but know that I know that will drop the lower half I'll give that a try thanks.

You can go to http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index....9aa8bdd7efb79a and see a diagram of the 1968 65hp. They are very similar, except the '68 has an electronic ignition system. Be glad yours doesn't.

Note the top end of the shift rod inside the clamp has a tapered portion that must line up with the bolt when put back together. Also, you may have to wiggle and pull the lower end if the water tube grommet is good and tight. When you replace the grommet the new one will be tight requiring you to push and wiggle the lower end into place. A little oil goes a long way to make it easier.

I got to the impeller and what i notice is that its a real tight fit, so much so that the fins are bent almost to the point of breaking. its such a tight fit that its really hard for it to turn. Is that normal? or do I need the right size?

I went ahead and put everything back together. to try and start it with some water to see if what will happen. I have gas for it, everything looks right from what I can tell but it doesn't come on. Does anyone have some ideas for why it's not coming on

Yes, the impeller is a tight fit.

Can you provide some more detail on the rest of the problem?
Does the starter spin the motor when the key is turned?
You did mix oil with the gas?

Sorry on the details I'm new to boating all together. I got the gas tank already full from the last guy who had it so I'm not sure if its mixed or not. The second problem is that I'm not getting ignition. When I turn the key the motor starts to turn, but that is all it does. It just turns like it wants to start but no ignition. I am at a lose as to where to go from here

Here's pic of the impeller in the water pump housing. Note the key way on the impeller. Did you make sure to put the key in the drive shaft?
As far as your starting problem, you're going to have to do some troubleshooting and post some results here for us to go on. It could any one of a multitude of causes. Whatever you do, DON'T START IT WITHOUT BEING IN WATER!. You'll melt the impeller in a few seconds.
Sounds like a manual would be a good investment before the next tank of gas. If you can't tell if there's oil in the gas, burn it in your car and get fresh gas and marine TC-W3, 2 cycle oil.
Not that it matters a whole lot but the model number you quoted is a Johnson number. They were usually white and Evinrudes were blue or brownish gold colour. Everything is interchangeable.

I'm told that my ignition problem could be my points and condensers. Though I don't know the location to find out if I need a new one.

Nevermind I found it.

Ok new problem, I might have pumped too much fuel into the motor, because now when I try running it I get backfires. The odd part is that I'm getting the backfire out of the bottom where the water sucks in. Now I do have it lowered in water. When it backfires water shoots out of the bottom

i think that u might have a lean sneeze.

did u just get this motor? i would suggest u check compression and spark to makes ure the motor is acually worth using and fixing

from what I'm told she ran. How would I go about testing compression and spark? Could it be maybe I put the impeller back on backwards (fins going the other direction) ?

OK so through some more testing I found several problems.

One of my water pump tubes has a hole.
When I forced water through the water pump, leaks came out of my gaskets. ( when I took them off they were so old and warn they practically just fell apart)
When I try running it I get a spark and backfire from the exhaust inside.
Inside the belt drive distributor it looks like someone stuck a screw driver on my point & condenser and dented one side of it pretty bad.

Things I'll be doing are getting new gaskets and cleaning out the whole motor.
New fuel and right oil mixture to cancel out fuel/oil problems.

Can anyone else give me an idea as to what else my backfire problem could be.

BTW I have the manual for this motor now.

Back firing would be from the timing belt off a notch or two. Find the timing marks on the flywheel, top of engine block and on the distributor pulley. They all have to line up when the belt goes on.
One water tube will likely have a small hole or two drilled through it to spray the exhaust on it's way down. Check my previous threads for that one.
What gaskets were leaking?
Yes, you could have the impeller in backwards but it wouldn't affect the running, just cooling.
When you replace the points and condensor don't loosen or tighten the large nut on the pulley with the belt on or you'll break the belt and lose another 50 bucks on this.

The gaskets that were leaking where from the spark plug plate.

I've got the motor running now. Just waiting on my new gaskets, then I can test for leaks
