Hello Gurus!

Just thought I would let you know of the beginning stages of a restoration project of an '88 Glastron SSV-199. We just bought her a couple months ago. A few weeks after the purchase was complete, we noticed the entire transom was rotten. Then later noticed some rot in the decking and one of the stringers near the bow. You can check out our photos and progress here:

I'm sure to be checking in for some advice and other guidance. This forum is awesome, thanks for your contributions to the knowledge base here.

SInce you are in deep now........ why not go the rest of the way and pull the cap off the boat. This will provide you with a clear area to do the stringers and the sole.

We had a boat expert (about 30 years of boat repair) who owns a local shop take a look at our situation before we started. That question came up and after looking at the issue, it really isn't required to take the cap off. We'll be replacing all of the decking though. Once we saw that we had full access to the inboard stringers near the bow we knew we didn't have to disassemble more of the boat.

It's been going quite smoothly so far, I hope that continues.

I purchased the wood last weekend, ordered the fiberglassing materials and boat parts today. I also posted some more photos tonight.

Hie, We have a 58 glastron, soon to come out of storage, hopefully no rotten stringers and transom, good luck!

My wife and I just watched "Live and Let Die". The Bond movie featuring a couple Glastrons.

Post some photos of your '58 when you get it out of storage, I'd love to see it.

We're DONE with the restoration.

Check out the photos, I'm uploading more and more each day that were taken as we finished the project. Sorry for the delay here, I couldn't find any extra "spare" time to upload photos during the end of the project because we were so busy finishing things up. The point is, we have a lot of photos queued up.

The restoration work checked out fine. She wasn't taking in any more lake water and looks beautiful now. This is totally awesome.

Unfortunately we ran into a snag after a couple days on the lake. Just before we were due to come back home we suddenly, while cruising, heard a banging noise coming from the stern drive. To make a long story short. After getting her back home I noticed some metal flakes in the stern drive gear oil and haven't done any further inspection yet but am guessing some gear teeth broke off. Looks like a full stern drive replacement is our only viable solution so we'll be eating peanut butter sandwiches and ramen noodles to save money for that... :(

I just wanted to send a sincere thanks to everyone for the tremendous amount of help I got from iBoats on the fiberglassing and stringer replacement, etc...

THANKS!!!
