75 hp 3 cyl. evinrude

i have a 1986 75 hp 3 cyl. outboard. It starts and runs well untill you put it in the water and put a load on it. it runs ok at a very low speed but as soon as i try and open it up it just boggs way down. I can only get it to about 2000 rpms. and then it just boggs down. i cleaned the carbs and checked the plugs and all looks well. can any one help me out. im dieing to get back on the water... thanks

Did you manually clean the brass fixed high speed jets?

im sorry i dont really know what you mean by the high speed jets.... i pulled the plugs again and the bottom plug. (#3 cylinder) and it is cleaner than the other to.

It sounds like you have a carb issue, I had the same motor in 1983 form for about 5 years. The same thing happened to me. Take the Carbs apart, soak them in carb cleaner overnight. Get the rebuild kits and go through the jets with a piece of brass or copper to clean them out. Before I got down to it being a fuel issue I narrowed it down by doing a compression check and checking the spark on each cylinder. Go one step at a time and get to the problem.

i did let the carbs sit in cleaner for about a day and a half. all i did was take the bowls off and let the carbs and the bowls sit. i didnt actually take the carbs apart and rebuild them or change or clean the jets. should i do this?? and how can i find out the right way to rebuild them. thanks for your help!!!

The first thing you should do, is to buy an OEM service manual. Next on the list is to search this site and others for information on rebuilding carburetors.

To answer your basic question, yes you should clean every part of the carburetors. A complete rebuild kit for each carb should be purchased and all of the parts for your carbs (the kit may contain parts for other carbs) should be used. All passages and jets should be cleaned thoroughly and the new floats should be adjusted. The rebuild kits (three) should cost you a little under a hundred dollars.

You will also need a special screwdriver to remove the fixed high speed jets. If you do a search on this forum, you should find a couple of threads on this issue, with one or more describing how to make the necessary screwdriver out of a standard one.

ok thanks, so it sounds like everyone seems to agree that it is a carberator issue. so i will try and find a place or website that i can order the kits... thanks to everyone. p.s. is the rebuild difficult? and i heard that when you do take the carbs apart you have to have them all sinked so that they all function and work at the same time. if that makes any sence... lol.. thanks to all

It is possble to take the carbs off without detaching the linkages, but you should probably plab on doing a "link & sync." An OEM service manual will explain how to do it. There are also numerous post here on the topic.

when i buy the rebuild carb kits should i get the ones that come with the new float or not. ?? should i just rebuild the whole thing with the new floats and everything??? thanks so much
