I don't think so, that indicates a lack of water, and exhaust leaking into the water jacket. bad head gasket comes to mind

took off what i thought was the head ... it ended up being a plate for the water jacket. (Does this motor not have head gasket? there was no way i could see the pitson tops) did not look like that gasket could allow exhaust into the water jacket. then i removed the plates/ covers for the exhaust and water jacket on the left side of the motor if standing from behind and there it looks like the gasket might have had a bad spot i ordered a new impeller kit and gaskets any more insight would be great.

are you sure it was exhaust and not steam? my impeller went bad, and i had steam coming throught the tell tale after running for 3-4 min on a cool day. i smelt it, and held my hand over it, and my hand was covered in oily water, it was the water pump and housing that was bad. had i run the motor longer it may hae been the head gasket gone!! thank god i didnt
