had my bayliner 2655 5,7 litre out today, ran very well with 3 people on board, then i ran it with 6 people in it, it would not plane at all, if i add a little weight to front will this improve it, it is a 26 foot boat. or is this just normal?

Re: planeing

Did you remember to trim it out right? Trim tab positions if you have them?

Depending on the boat design, that's a heavy boat to begin with especially with 6 people in it. When was the last time you did a basic tune on it? Did you have problems like this before with the same amount of people on it?

Re: planeing

That's a big boat for a 5.7 engine - especially with six people. It is common to have to put a few people up front in order to plane the boat out. I had the same issue with mine and it is only a 24.5' boat with a 5.7 engine.

If it runs good with a light load, I wouldn't suggest messing around with the prop - unless you normally run it loaded up with people and equipment.

Re: planeing

Go out again and take note of the rpm and mph at full speed (WOT)
here are some possible reasons, what kind of drive and prop?
1. Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
2. Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades
3. Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve Fuel System Test
4. Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse
5. Marine growth on hull and outdrive
6. Wrong gear ratio in outdrive
7. Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor)
8. Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive
9. Poor cylinder compression Compression Test
10. Carburetor defective, or wrong type.
11. Fuel pump pressure and vacuum
12. Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.
13. Engine Overheating
14. Engine timing and ignition system operation
15. Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.

Re: planeing

you will prob need to drop down 2 inches in pitch, see how close you are to reccomended rpms

Re: planeing

I have a 98 2655 and have a total of 6 people regularly with full water tank, gas tank and cooler.I also run a 16x16 prop and have no problem at all planing. 25 mph at 3150 rpm.

Re: planeing

sounds like you are not performing to the optimum. it should have no problem planeing, using trim tabs and trim properly. of course, every one can't be sitting on the stern bench.

Re: planeing

I agree with FisherMark. That is a big boat for a single smallblock V8. The best thing to do is to put the typical load in the boat, get her on plane and see what the WOT RPM is, and adjust the prop pitch accordingly. Remember that changing the pitch 2" changes the RPM by about 400. When you have the correct prop installed and you load her up with people, be prepared to have some of them in the bow when you try to plane.

Re: planeing

good list coastalcruiser but you forgot "verify that trailer is not still attached."

Here's a waterman's trick to get on a plane: run over shallow water; the water pressure will lift you. Of course you have to know your bottom well (we only do this over soft mud). Works for small boats esp. flat bottoms like carolina skiff.
