So I went and bought a dozen(twin eng.) champion QL78YC spark plugs($2.35ea) as per directed by this web site and the owners manual. How tight or how much friction should it take to pull your gauge thru to achieve the perfect .030 gap??

Thanks

.030 should move thru, next size should not.

There should be a "slight drag" when sliding then gauge through.

Not tight, not loose either.
0.029 will be loose, 0.031 will be tight even if it fits.

But is it that critical?

There is a definite technique to using a feeler gauge to set the gap of a spark plug. That may be why they are called "feeler gauges". The correct thickness feeler gauge should pull thru the properly gapped plug with a bit of friction, but not too much.
A lot of plugs come pre-gapped. You still need to check 'em, but they should be close.
