I am remodeling a 15' Starcraft to fit my fishing needs and using a 1963 40 hp Evinrude electric shift for power. The engine starts and runs but won't shut off when I turn the key off. I must have it wired wrong. Any suggestions??

Re: engine starts won't stop

Sure we have suggestions. The two "M" (magneto) terminals on the ignition switch short the ignition to ground to kill the engine. That obviously is not happening. With the switch ON, use an ohm meter and measure resistance to ground on one "M" terminal and then the other. One of the terminals should read "0" ohms (completed circuit). The other should read something other than 0. If one reads open circuit (infinity), that terminal needs to be connected to ground.

Hmmm. Ah, it makes sense. Now I have to figure out which wire from the control box is from M. What is your suggestion?

Don't know for sure on that old engine but my guess would be black.
