Default new boat owner

Good morning.
I got a boat yesterday for free 16 ft bowrider1971 and a 1991 johnson 48hp.
Looked around on the site for a while and did not find to much info on that motor.
Need to find out if motor works before spening money on this project.

1. can i run motor on jumper cables?
2. would it be good to run like a 40 to 1 since motor has not run in a year?
3. what does that other leaver on the back oft he throttle?
Thanks
George

the reason you do not see much about them, is they are that good. i have several of it's sisters. easy to work on. read this > http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

you can start it with jumper cables, but not recommended. you will probably have to clean the carbs, and install a rebuild kit, replace the impeller.

is this a fresh or salt water motor?

From what i gathered it been in both and most recent in salt where it sat for two months.
thanks for such a quick responce.
So it would be best to borrow my truck battery for testing ?

At the risk of being too condescending, when you test the motor make sure it has water at the impeller.

I have an '89 50 hp, which I'm sure is similar. It is a great, dependable motor. And I don't think it necessary, but 40-1 probably won't hurt anything for the first tank of fuel. I'd go back to 50-1 after that.

If the motor is new to you and you're not sure of the history, I'd probably change the gear oil in the lower unit and plan on replacing the impeller.

had more time to work on the new boat and took out spark plug and tried to turn motor over by hand then wrench. it would not budge took off head to see what the pistons looked like. they are a little rusty and dont want to move.
So i am thinking its going to need a rebuild i will keep an eye on craglist for cheap motor for now till i can out together a price list for this now fast growing project.

thank for giveing me pionters and i now know what that other handle on throttle is its the nutral gear for motor.
