My fuel guage is not working and I am looking for some help. This is on a 1986 19' bayliner capri. I read 8 volts both at the sender and at the guage. What range should the voltage be? Thank

There are two items on a boat that are notorious for giving false readings. One is your pitot based speedometer and the other is your fuel gauge. I'd start by removing all of your connections, cleaning them really good ( replacing is really easier ) and reinstall with some dielectric grease.
I really can't help you with your voltage question - hopefully someone will come along who can.
Maybe a call to your closest Bayliner dealer would help getting that answered.

The speed seems ok, I will try cleaning all of the connections. I am thinking about removing the sender and locally wiring it at the console and move the flapper to see if the voltage changes. Thanks for the help.

Another thing to consider. If your fuel sender is at fault it can be bought at most any auto parts store. One of the very few items on a boat that can safely be used. BOAT = BUCKS !!!!!

Pull the sender out and move the float with it connected. The voltage reading should vary from the empty position to the full position. If you are getting a good variable reading at the sender, move the test leads to the guage connections and do the same thing. If your not seeing a difference in voltage now, the problem is in the wiring. If your still seeing varing voltage readings, the guage is probably the problem.

Also, take a look at the resistor wires on the sending unit, they are very fragile and tend to rip after time. If your missing wires, throw the sender out and get a universal sender for 12 bucks at a marine store.
