Help, I can't get my lower unit to go back on after replacing the water pump. I followed the book and had my buddy turn the fly wheel after seating the water conection. any tricks would be greatly appreciated. The bruises on my arms and legs are mounting in numbers.

Just a quick guess without knowing what type of motor... Did you make sure the "bushing" or "spacer" over the drive shaft (that goes into the waterpump) was turned the right way? My motor at least has "protrusions" on one side that MUST be turned out AWAY from the housing wall or else it won't seat...

Re: lower unit help

I always put a little grease on anything that needs to slide into something else, especially the drive shaft and the seal on the water tube.

Be sure your shift rod isn't hung up on the gasket below the power head.

Once you get it on a little trick I found to get the shift rod bolt back in the hole is(at least on mine) there is a small break between the lower and mid at the front of the engine and you can get a pair of needle nose vise grips and move the shift rod wherever it needs to go.
