Question Changing water pump on 40hp mercury 402

I changed the water pump on my mercury 40 hp 402 outboard but after finishing the shifter linkage is out of wake and i still have low water pressure. Can the water pump be put in either way?

Please help me fix this!

I just did the same job The impellar will only turn one way
my water preasure was low because the water jacket gasket sprung a leak
which I am now trying to fix
cannot seem to find a replacement part so i gooped it up (cross fingers)

My gear linkage is still out I had neutral and reverse now I only have forward will try again later to line it up

should be easy put linkage in Neutral put shifter in netraql and re-install but did not work oh well

one comment is if you are using muffs the pressure will not max out
I managed to fix my gear linkage by finding neutral with the leg off (forward engages one way reverse engages both ways)
put the shifter in neutral oand slide leg on carefully
the shift linkage inside motor will push up a bit so hold it down I also clamped vise grips on ther linkage exposed along the leg

do you see any leaks aroung the head or along the lower leg

my pressure is good now will go out to the lake tomorrow for a good test.
