i need help... i bought a 1976 25 hp evinrude and it wasnt pumping much water out the exaust hole and it would get hot quickly. so i ordered a new impeller and put it in today and still the same problem...hardley any water coming out, and the head gets to hot to touch in just a few seconds of running in the barrel, i looked to see if a baggy got sucked in or something and there is nothing clogging it. i see when you order the impeller "kit" it comes with the metal plate. could that be the problem? the metal plate is worn? On a motor that old, I would have opted for a complete water pump kit instead of just the impeller. But I doubt a worn plate would cause the motor to overheat as quickly as yours apparently did.

Your motor also has a thermostat ... I'd strongly suggest replacing it with a new one ... but be careful removing the the 3 bolts that hold the thermostat cover on ... it's really easy to shear one off on an old motor!

A couple other thoughts ... are you sure you put the impeller pin back in? ... and the water tube, was there a grommet or o-ring at the top of the exhaust housing that it fits in? If so, was it properly seated? How about the grommet in the water pump housing?

i replaced the water line grommet today, didnt help, the pin is in the impeller, i removed the thermistat, made no difference. i just removed the powerhead, looks like i need a new gasket in there too (when i ran water up the waterline it was comming out the powerhead). i still dont think ive found the problem.

well just incase anybody was wondering...it was the impeller plate causing it not to pump. i replaced it with a new one and it pumps like a son of a gun! Thanks, Dennis
