Hello there, 1978 galaxie 22xl with merc 260.

Chevy crate motor with 100 hrs on it.

Going to do my first oil change on this boat. I am not sure what oil the previous owner had in it, but I bought Mobil 1 synthetic OW-30 oil. Says exceeds 5W-30 and 10W 30.

Which filter should I buy?

Is this oil ok to run? I know oil threads get all crazy on here, I just want to know if this oil is ok.

Thanks for you help!

Ok, so Mobil 1 OW-30 is going to be ok then? Just want to make sure before I put it in, and head to the lake.

What is the best oil filter to use?

Thanks

You couldn't have posted this...and have visited the thread that Don pointed you to!

For the sake of your engine, look at the Mercury chart in that post.

Wix makes a very good filter for your engine...NAPA sells them!

Even with all the craziness in oil threads here, you'll probably have a hard time finding someone to tell you to use 0W-30. WAY too light an oil for the load on a boat motor. Do like Rocky says, look at the chart in the thread Don referenced!!!!
