Hello all,

I have an older model Evinrude 15hp with pull and electric start that I received from a cousin. It had sat up for a while but we did get it to idle prior to starting any maintenence. Here is what has been done: New plugs, new gas mix, compression checked and okay, new impeller installed, carb cleaned, new battery.

Here is the deal: We have good spark at the plugs and the engine does not flood when trying to crank BUT I cannot get it to crank. The starter turns it over fine but it doesn't catch to idle. It acts like it is not getting fuel. I have a new fuel line and primer bulb. However, I have a very old metal gas tank. Could this be my problem? When I disconnect the fuel line from the motor and push in the outlet no fuel comes out until I squeeze the primer bulb... should fuel already come out if the primer bulb is already primed?

I put the fuel line on backwards once and obviously it wouldnt crank (it seems like that is what is happening now BUT the fuel line is on correct)

Thoughts???

After you've cranked it you should check the plugs to see if they are getting gas to them. If they are dry do a carb. cleaning c/w a new kit. If your bulb gets firm, it is moving gas, if it doesn't get firm it may have a bad check valve in the bulb. The little ball in the connector is a check valve which is displaced when you connect it to the gas fitting on your motor so by design you can't get gas flow through the hose unless you move the ball out of place. The other thing to try is spraying a gas oil mix directly into the carb. when cranking. If the motor starts and runs you'll know you have a fuel problem. You say you cleaned the carb. so I would assume you set the needle valve to it's proper place for initial start? Look at the top item on this forum, Top Secret File for information about your initial carb. setting. Last thing is to have a look at this article as I believe it is a must read for any OMC 9.9 or 15 owner. Best of luck. Rick.

Question: Regarding spraying gas/oil mix directly into carb when cranking, should I just use a small squirt bottle?

That's what I use, but anything that gets fuel in there is fine. Some folks just dump a little shot of fuel right down the carb or in the plug holes. I prefer the spray bottle method because you can keep spraying fuel as it runs.

If you still suspect a fuel issue, then check your fuel pump by removing the fuel line to the carb and see if gas pumps when you pull the rope.

You did get the carb extra clean, right? Removed the high speed orifice and everything? If its blocked you will never get it going.
