71 9.5 johnson slips out of gear

my 1971 9.5 johnson slips out of gear when running at high rpms. But does not at lower rpms. anyone have any tips?

i want to see other replies on this also. i just bought a 1970 9.5 and on my only time on the water so far it jumped out of forward gear 2 or 3 times, i was thinking that i didnt put it in gear far enough. good luck.

well has the power unit been off recently, if so the shift linkage may not be connected correctly, they can be hard to do, the screw has to go thru the indent in the shift rod.

If not, then it sounds like the clutch dog & forward gear are going out.
