This motor is a manual shift. After removing the lower unit and inspecting gears, etc. I reassembled the lower unit and was able to ?feel? all three gears. After a day of usage, I am back to were I started. I can only find forward and reverse. There is no longer the ?clunking sound? when the I put the outboard into gear. Any ideas?

Also, the lower unit is leaking oil out of the propeller shaft... I would imagine this should be an easy fix by replacing the rear o-ring???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

After fooling with the shifter again today, I have found that the transition from forward to reverse is "rock solid". It takes a lot of effort to put this motor into gear. Is this common with old 40 HP 76' Johnsons?

no you have something wrong in the reinstallation. you need to have the lower unit pressure tested. to find the leak, then install a reseal kit. you really need an OEM manual for this. Outboardbooks.com
