Default Mercury 40HP 4 CYL Cooling Issues?

Hi All:
Title gives particulars for this 1990 2 stroke motor. This motor is new to me, and was purchased last fall and hasn't seen the water this spring. While preparing to put it in, put on the ear muffs and turned on the water. Nothing comes out anywhere. When run (briefly) same thing, nothing comes out anywhere. Still waiting for the facrtory service manual, but have some questions before it arrives:

Where are the water exits for this model? Does it have a thermostat? Appears it might have two water pumps. Is this so?

Thanks for any insight!

I'm confused. It's a 4 cylinder that only puts out 40hp? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it probably does not have a thermostat. With it only being a 40hp, I'd guess that it only has an impeller and that it would be pumping at all times when the engine is running. (this is only speculation because I'm not sure of your model) Perhaps you can provide a little more information.

Mark

If it is the same as my 93 40 hp, a stream of water should come from a small hole just to the right of the motor cover release as you look toward the front of the boat. Mine has a black rubber tube that connects at the top of the motor close to the top spark plug and runs down the right side of the cylinders to the aforementioned hole. Mud daubers (insects) like to build in these tubes and clog them completely. Remove the tube and make sure it is clear. Mine takes about 10-15 seconds at idle to start streaming water from the hole.

Yeah it really is a 4 cyl with 40hp. I'm familiar with an Evinrude of about the same vintage and thought I knew what to look for. I've let it idle for at least a minute, but no water. I can' find the rubber outlet tube at all. I'll know a whole lot more when I drop the lower unit and inspect the water pump. Then I'll know if the seller was honorable. Thanks for the comments.

Follow up to my original post/question: The water outlet was plugged up and it looked like a tiny air filter. It was right in front of me. Replacement of the water pump was very straightforward, but two people made installing the housing over the new impeller MUCH easier. Next time I'll install the impeller without the upper gasket in place, remove the housing with the impeller still inside the housing and then place the final gasket on the metal piece. The gasket won't rip that way... Old impeller was very tired. Water now comes out like it's a healthy horse!

Hey darcyo, I've got the same 40 hp merc and am going to attempt to change water pump also. Only difference is I'm new to boat motors and would appreciate any suggestions that you might have. I, like you located the tube that goes to the weep hole and disconected it there. After clearing tube of mud I then tried to get water to move thru system while motor was at idle for a minute or 2. No luck. I then blew thru the tube and air freely came out of the water intake area where you put the earmuffs on to run water thru engine. I guess like you it's time for water pump.
any suggestions???
