unless you have a 951 engine you don't have reed valves

Jeff,

He's probably talking about the RAVE, or exhaust valves.

wutagoalie,

cleaning the exhaust valves is a good idea- if for some reason they get stuck, you'll lose top end revs... remove, clean all the carbon off (i use wire wheel on grinder) replace. you can try to clean the carbon off in the slot on the cylinder head, but i do not suggest it 'cause you can get carbon bits falling into the cylinder....

Sorry guys, i meant rave valves. Little black cups with the red middle. Question, someone mentioned to me that i should replace the rubber gaskets or bushings once i take these apart? Is that true or not.

Also , am i just cleaning off the carbon residue, and putting them back together?

What else can i do as far as basic maintenance, because i havent really done much to this machine over the years.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks
