how to replace exhaust shutter

I have a 77 mercury 140 4 cyl.It is an mr outdrive.I am wondering if you have to remove engine to replace exhaust shutter.Is it bolted inor how do you replace it? thanks phil:confused:

Yeah, you do, unless you take off the exhaust manifold. The shutter is mounted in the top of the exhaust pipe that is bolted to the transome assy. The new one will slide into notches in the top of the pipe.

If you really use some muscle, you can get the rubber boots off without removing the riser, then lift all of the extension pipes off and whalla!, you should be staring at the shutter bracket. Now getting the boots back on after it is replaced.. that may be tricky. If you haven't ordered the shutter yet, just tack a riser gasket on to the order. Two bolts and your life is soo much easier.
