nope, cannot be air bound.
could be low water pressure on your hose or an air leak at the rubber dam under the wear plate but the pump overherated and the only cause for housing melt is lack of water to the impellor.
takes 30 seconds to destroy a housing and impellor if its started dry.
I aint following the prime with the muff thing?

You may have some debris stuck in the water tube. When you took everything apart, were all the vanes on the impeller intact...or were bits missing? If so, some could have become lodged preventing water to pump to the motor.

Drop the LU, remove the thermostat, and see if you can back flush the path.

Also, you may have pinched the grommet where the housing mates with the copper water tube.

I agree. You should take it apart and re-inspect.

I am not baffeled at all, now.
you just told me what you did wrong.
you failed to FULLY submerge the gearcase.
that water pump is NOT totally self priming UNLESS its submerged.
means the PARTING line of the gearcase to midsection must be at least 1 inch below the water line in a tank.
if not the pump sucks air from the pump drain holes and frys the housing and impellor no matter how new.
its the same with all brands.
next attempt either use the muffs or FULLY submerge the case.
water inlets kinda in the water does not qualify as fully submerged.
sorry.
