I'm wondering who did the work on your engine.

It can happen, the caution is in the service manual and the proper proceedure to avoid damage is in the manual.
What can happen, if the oil line is not primed, is an air pocket in the oil line from the tank can prevent oil from reaching the pump.
Proper proceedure calls for pumping the bulb to bring oil up to the end of the tube BEFORE attaching to the engine, then run the engine on pre-mixed gas and oil UNTIL the oil level in the oil tank is visibly being drawn down.
Once oil consumption is visibly confirmed its ok to run engine on straight gas.
If the above is done, the system is good and reliable.
So it looks like #2,
pump was installed wrong and the backup system not used.
It sucks I know, silly little things can ruin a great engine but it pays to know the engine or pay someone a lot of money to know it for you. Most of us here buy the factory service manual for $40 and read it .
