I am new to the site, so I might have some pretty simple questions.

I just pulled my grandfathers old 1960 lightwin 3hp motor (SN 3034-04794) out of the shed I like this one for doing a rebuild just for the old timey look. We also have a evinrude 4 horse model 4506A from 1975.

The motor was in storage from I can only assume 1975 when the 4 horse was purchased I am 24 years old and have never seen the lightwin out.

The motor turned very easily once i removed the gas tank and pull start cable. I didn't wanna rip on the cable incase the thing was locked up.

I pulled the motor apart a bit removed the carb to get it rebuilt saved all the gaskets since i am not sure of avaiability. I read on here the 4506A from 75 has the same carb so that gasket set would work but I am not sure.

There is oil in the prop housing but it needs to be replace and I don't know what to use. I also see a place to oil at the bottom of the motor I don't know what kind or how much oil goes in there.

I pulled the exhaust plate to get a better look at the rings and pistons and they looked pretty good no scoring or pieces flopping around so its not blown up.

The electrical components in the top of the motor are bright and shiny with no signs of corrosion so I am just going to leave them alone. I would like to change the plug cables but they seem to be ok no cracks or anything just old.

I am planning on just cleaning the carb changing all the oil and re assembling the thing since it seems to be in working order. Is there anything I should replace before I do this? I read that the mix is TCW oil 24:1 is that correct?

please let me know if I am doing something terribly wrong by this motor I am figuring its just an old two stroke but then agian this is my first outboard.

The part's are readily available, and those can be great running little engines'. Get a sevice manual. This will lead you through the step's to take to put it back in condition. Go to the fax section on starting an older engine.

OK i removed the lower section and drained it checked the water pump impeller which was suprisingly in great condition still rubbery and still fitting snugly in the pump so I figure its good to go. Lube in the lower section was a little settled red during most of the draining then to black and thick but no metal I ran a magnet over the drainings to make sure. Just need flush the lower end out with some 2+2 then refill with TCW-3

I don't want to spend the money for the manual I am a decent mech and have friends who are much more experianced with two strokes then me.

I would still like to make sure is the fuel mix 24 to 1 for a 1960 lightwin 3hp?
Also anyone know off hand what new model spark plugs these things take?
I pulled champion J 6J plugs out of it but they are older then me.

TCW-3 is the oil you mix with the gas, premium blend, or better in the lower unit. I said these can be good running engines. What I meant was, in the right hand's they can be good running engine's. You need a manual, or at least someone familiar with these engine's.

BIG mistake, psu. Put your ego away and do it right the first time.

The correct plugs are Champion J4C (replaces the J4J) gapped at .030", though the J6C can be used for low speed/trolling applications.

TC-W3 oil is for mixing fuel, not lubricating the gearcase. Lube the gearcase with standard outboard gearcase grease/oil as available in any marine store or lube section at Wal Mart.

Service the engine as instructed in the factory Service Manual. . .linkage, timing, etc.
