Default 1996 Mariner Outboard 115 HP oil Injected 2 stroke blown??

I ran it out of oil (low oil beeper never went off) and I'm getting a major ticking noise, still seems to run good excepct for the anoying tick.

I keep getting differnt advice from repair men. One says he can tear it down replace all four cyliners, pistons and rings for about $2200 parts a labor. The other says you cant repair an engine that was run out of oil you better to buy a new or used engine and another says why fix it all jusy fix the bad piston?????

What should be done? They all have me so confused[/size]

Most ANY engine can be repaired, at a cost.

What cost?

That all depends on the damage found once it is taken totally apart and every internal part inspected and mic'd.

You COULD get very lucky and get by with ONE piston, new rings on ALL pistons, plus gaskets and seals.

Then again, the crank could be scarred, rods egged out, all bearings roasted, all cyl's and pistons scored. Worst case, a re-manufactured or new engine COULD be cheaper AND carry a warranty.

Until it is taken apart, it is only an educated guess.

Many of us are pretty good, d&%# near the best, but we are NOT psychic, and have to look at EVERY part before we can give you an accurate cost to repair.

You could learn to do the job yourself, at least then you could save the cost of most of the labor.

Just keep posting your questions here and we will try to assist you.

You could run a compression test, a leak down test and even set a dial micrometer on the piston through the plug hole and on the flywheel to see if there is movement between the crank and pistons.

Problem is, these require special tools and a bit more than basic knowledge, which may frustrate you more than help. But it could let you know if the crank/bearings and wrist pin/rod are fine and its just a ring and hone job.

If you must hire someone for these tests, it might cost you just as much to have it torn down.

Hate to hear of your bad fortune, good luck with it.
