Evinrude 6 hp wont shift into forward gear

The first time i took it out it ran for about five minutes and then overheated and stopped running. I replaced the impeller and the housing and it pumps out water fine, but now it wont shift into forward gear. It's a 1993 Evinrude 6hp model # ER6ETB

The shift linkage probably isn't connected correctly.
